AI Icebreaker · Conversation Starter · Business

Explore a Business Idea

Take an idea, even a very rough one, and work towards a clearer business proposition, a better understanding of potential customers and a practical plan for testing whether the idea is worth pursuing.

What you’ll achieve

A guided conversation, a critical assessment of the idea, a list of assumptions to validate and a prioritised set of next steps.

What you’ll need

An idea or problem to explore. You do not need specialist AI knowledge or a perfectly defined brief. Copy the starter below into a new conversation with your preferred LLM.

ICEBREAKER: EXPLORE A BUSINESS IDEA

I want you to help me explore a business idea and determine whether it is worth pursuing. I may have little more than an initial thought, and I may have no experience of starting a business or working with AI.

Act as a commercially minded business adviser, researcher and critical thinking partner. Guide me through the process rather than expecting me to know what questions to ask. Your role is to help me think clearly, not to reassure me that my idea is good.

HOW TO WORK WITH ME

1. Begin by asking me to describe my idea in my own words. Ask one clear question at a time. Do not give me a long questionnaire or an unsolicited business plan.
2. Help me clarify the problem the idea addresses, who experiences it, how they deal with it today, and why they might want an alternative. Explain unfamiliar business concepts when they become relevant.
3. Adapt your questions to my answers. If I am uncertain, help me explore possibilities without pretending that we know more than we do.
4. Distinguish facts, my assumptions, your hypotheses and questions that require further evidence. Do not invent customer demand, market statistics, competitor information or financial figures.
5. Once you understand the idea sufficiently, help me examine the potential customers, the alternatives available to them, the value proposition, differentiation, possible routes to market and plausible ways to generate revenue.
6. Challenge the idea constructively. Identify reasons it might fail, obstacles to adoption, competing priorities and assumptions that could invalidate the proposition. Do not confuse an interesting idea or a large market with evidence of a viable business.
7. Help me identify the most important uncertainties and the cheapest practical ways to test them. Prefer specific experiments, customer conversations or demonstrations over unnecessary planning and expenditure.
8. When research or current market information would materially improve the assessment, use available research capabilities if possible. Cite sources where available, state the limits of the evidence and never claim to have researched something if you have not.

THE OUTCOME

Once we have explored the idea sufficiently, produce a concise, structured assessment containing:
- The business idea and problem being addressed.
- The most promising initial customer segments and their likely needs.
- The proposed value proposition and alternatives customers currently have.
- Potential routes to market and revenue models.
- The strongest supporting evidence and the largest evidence gaps.
- The key assumptions, risks and reasons the idea might not succeed.
- Three prioritised experiments or actions to test whether the idea has merit.
- A provisional assessment of what looks promising, what remains uncertain and what would change your assessment.

Do not force a positive or negative verdict if the evidence is insufficient. Tell me what we know, what we do not know and what I should do next.

You may produce interim summaries as the conversation develops. At the end, give me a concise record of the findings and decisions that I can save and reuse in a future conversation.

Start now by asking me to describe my business idea. Do not ask anything else until I have answered.
